Overview

24/7 security guard coverage in California isn't three overnight shifts stacked together. If your property runs around the clock, you need 168 hours of weekly coverage, live supervision on the overnight shift, and a roster deep enough to take care of the call-outs without creating issues.

The Math

What 24/7 security guard coverage actually means

24/7 means an officer is physically on-site every minute of every day, including 4 a.m. on a Wednesday and 11 a.m. on Christmas. That’s 168 hours a week.

The schedule is usually 8 hour shifts with 3 guards everyday. Two 12 hour shifts on the weekends. Less than that and you’re paying for fatigued guards, missed checkpoints, and the Saturday when the only person scheduled calls out. So in total, for a 24/7 site, you need at least 5-6 guards.

If a quote doesn’t account for the math, the company is staffing the contract too thin. Coverage problems show up inside the first quarter.

Failure Points

Where 24/7 security coverage breaks down

24/7 coverage doesn’t usually fail at the day shift. It fails in places day-only contracts never touch.

Shift handoffs.

The 10 to 20 minutes between one officer leaving and the next arriving is when the property is most exposed. Without proper overlap, the post sits empty. Without a briefing, the incoming officer walks in blind. They don't know what happened on the previous shift, which doors got propped, or who's still on-property after hours. Tight shift coverage protocols are what keep this gap closed.

Weekend and holiday rosters.

Six officers can cover 24/7 cleanly during a normal week. Put that same crew through a long holiday weekend with two call-outs and you're staring at a coverage crisis. Most 24/7 contracts that fail at month two break during a holiday stretch, when on-call reserves have already been burned through. We assign reserve officers to scheduled cover shifts so every site gets proper coverage.

Single-officer posts during incidents.

When the only officer on shift gets pulled into a 20-minute access dispute, the rest of the property is unmanned the whole time. On higher-risk sites we either double-staff the post or run a roving mobile patrol alongside the static officer.

Audit Your 24/7 Setup

Don't wait for your 24/7 contract to break at month two.

We come in, audit handoffs, weekend rosters, and overnight supervision, then tell you exactly where the current setup is failing.

The Right Way

What 24/7 guard coverage done right looks like

Pillar 01

Coverage map and shift design first.

Risk doesn't distribute evenly across 168 hours, and most properties don't need symmetric 24/7. A medical office might need reduced staffing on weekends. A warehouse with overnight inbound might double-staff between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and run lean during the day. We map your risk windows hour by hour, then load officers based on where the risk concentrates.

Pillar 02

Post orders written for round-the-clock realities.

A 24/7 post order spells out what changes between shifts. The day team is mostly tenant-facing: delivery verification, visitor management, and access. Evening picks up common-area lockup and after-hours restrictions. By overnight, the work is mostly internal patrols, alarm response, and access for night-shift workers. Three different missions across the day need three different post orders. A single "patrol the property" template for all three is one of the most common reasons 24/7 contracts produce inconsistent results.

Pillar 03

Shift handoff protocol locked down before the first shift.

Every shift change includes a 15-minute on-site overlap and a verbal briefing covering prior-shift incidents and open items. Both officers sign a Silvertrac handoff log entry to document the change. The incoming officer takes the post knowing what they're walking into.

Pillar 04

Overnight supervision built in from the start.

Your on-site point of contact supervises the day shifts. Overnight shifts don't have that backup, so we monitor them directly. Our 24/7 dispatch watches every Silvertrac checkpoint in real time, and a missed overnight check triggers a phone call to the officer inside 15 minutes. Field supervisors also run unannounced overnight site visits, because that's where supervision tends to break down.

All of this runs under our three-layer accountability system, covered in full elsewhere.

Right-Sizing

When full 24/7 security is overkill

Full 24/7 isn’t the right answer for every property that thinks it needs it. We’ve talked clients out of 24/7 contracts when the incident data didn’t support that level of coverage.

Properties with overnight or weekend incident concentration often do better on hybrid coverage. Overnight-only coverage from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. pairs well with daytime mobile patrol checkpoints. Together they typically deliver about 80 percent of the protection at 60 percent of the cost of full 24/7.

Properties with heavy daytime activity and quiet overnights usually run the opposite setup: a daytime post for access control and visitor management, paired with randomized overnight mobile patrol. Same dollars, different deployment, often better outcomes.

Ā

Full 24/7 is the right call for continuous-risk properties, all-hours operations, and specific compliance environments like medical facilities, data centers, and certain banking sites. For everyone else, the hybrid model is worth pricing before signing full time security. For pricing across both, see our California security guard cost page.

Get Started

Set up a 24/7 security coverage assessment

Before quoting a 24/7 contract, we walk the property, assess the risk level, understand your issues and recommend what service to add. A lot of security companies treat 24/7 security contracts as an increase in revenue and profit. At Safeguard, one of our core principles is understanding client needs, developing a good relationship, and recommending what’s needed, not what’s going to bring the most revenue. We understand that it might take you a week or a month to decide on security, we’re there to help you throughout the process, not pressure you into signing a contract.

Call (877) 766-5499 or email info@safeguardpss.com. Tell us what your property runs, what coverage you have now, and whether you’re shopping new or replacing an existing 24/7 vendor. If full 24/7 isn’t the right call for your site, we’ll say so and recommend the hybrid that fits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many guards do you actually need for a 24/7 post?+
Five to six officers in active rotation for a single post. That covers 168 weekly hours plus handoff overlap, time off, and call-outs. Companies that staff a 24/7 post with three officers are running on legal overtime that burns the team out within months. The signs usually show up on weekends, when one call-out collapses the schedule.
How do you supervise the overnight shift specifically?+
Our 24/7 dispatch watches every Silvertrac checkpoint in real time, including overnight. A missed check triggers a direct call to the officer within 15 minutes. Field supervisors run unannounced overnight site visits too, because that's where supervision typically breaks down on 24/7 contracts.
What happens at shift handoff on a 24/7 contract?+
Every shift change includes a 15-minute on-site overlap. The outgoing officer briefs the incoming officer face-to-face on open items, recent incidents, and any property-specific issues from the prior shift. The handoff gets logged in Silvertrac with both officer IDs and a timestamp, so the post is never empty during the change.
What happens if an officer doesn't show up for a 24/7 shift?+
On every 24/7 contract we keep reserve officers on scheduled cover shifts, which means they're assigned to specific hours and already briefed on your post orders. If the primary officer can't make their shift, the reserve covers it within the standard handoff window. You don't see a coverage gap, and we don't make a 3 a.m. call telling you we're short-staffed.
What does 24/7 security guard coverage cost per month in California?+
24/7 unarmed coverage typically runs between $20,000 and $32,000 a month, depending on city, post complexity, and contract length. Armed 24/7 runs roughly 30 to 60 percent higher because of the extra training, firearms permit, and insurance load. For the full 2026 rate breakdown and what drives price up or down, see our security guard cost page. Written quotes come back within 24 hours of the site walk.
Why pay more for Safeguard than a cheaper 24/7 contract?+
Cheaper 24/7 contracts almost always cut the staffing math. They run three officers instead of five, skip the handoff overlap, and have no overnight supervision system. The contract looks similar on paper, but it produces fatigued guards, missed checkpoints, and the original incidents back on the property within a few months. See why clients choose Safeguard.
What if we already have a 24/7 contract that's not working?+
That's most of our 24/7 onboarding. We come in, audit the existing setup, find where it's failing (usually handoffs, weekend staffing, or no overnight supervision), and either transition the contract over or run a 30-day parallel pilot so you can compare. Most clients see incident counts drop in the first month.
Are your 24/7 officers licensed and trained?+
Every officer on a 24/7 post holds a current BSIS Security Guard Registration with the 8-hour Power to Arrest and Use of Force training plus 32 additional skills hours. Armed officers also hold a BSIS Firearms Permit. PPO License #122311, verifiable at search.dca.ca.gov. Full credentials breakdown on our credentials page.
Do you use the same officers every shift or rotate them?+
Each post has a set of assigned officers, not a random rotation pool. The four to six officers on your 24/7 post are the same people week to week, and they know your property, tenants, and post orders. Rotation happens within the assigned team so no one is working five overnight shifts in a row, but the faces on your site stay consistent. More on our guard assignment process.
What property types do you run 24/7 for?+
The most common 24/7 contracts we run are healthcare facilities with overnight patient flow, data centers under continuous compliance, distribution warehouses on 24-hour inbound cycles, gated residential communities and large HOAs, regulated financial and banking offices, and mixed-use properties with tenants on different hours. Each one gets a shift pattern matched to its risk profile, not a default 8-on, 8-off, 8-on template.
