Armed Security Guard Services

Not every property needs an armed officer standing post. But some do, and the difference between those two categories isn’t always obvious from the outside.

Commercial warehouses with expensive inventory, financial institutions, dispensaries, hospitals, HOAs, and law offices are the types of environments where armed security guard services provide the protection that unarmed guards can’t provide. Additionally, it’s not just about what is on-site but also the consequences of security failure or underprotection. When a breach could result in serious injuries, major financial loss, or regulatory issues, paying extra for armed security service is a no-brainer. Safeguard provides armed security guards for properties where the stakes are high and security breaches can lead to major consequences, and we’re direct with clients whose risk profile doesn’t justify the cost or operational complexity of an armed detail.

That honesty matters more than most people realize. An armed security guard company that pushes armed coverage on every prospect regardless of actual threat level isn’t operating in your interest and is actually increasing your liability and risk. At Safeguard, we’d rather recommend unarmed officers and mobile patrol for a property that doesn’t need firearms on-site than oversell a service level that introduces liability without justifiable benefit.

When Armed Security Is the Right Fit — And When It Isn't

The decision to hire armed security guards should start with a risk assessment of previous incidents and not a gut feeling. Armed security guards cost more per hour than unarmed guards. That premium pays for additional firearms training, higher insurance costs, and officers who’ve met stricter state licensing thresholds. In California, armed guards must hold a valid BSIS-issued firearms permit and complete a minimum of 16 hours of firearms training in addition to the 40-hour guard card requirement before they can work an armed post.

So when does it make sense to pay that premium? The situations below are where we most commonly deploy armed security officers, and each one includes a specific operational reason:

  • Properties with high-value physical assets on-site: These properties include jewelry stores, cannabis operations, pharmaceutical storage, data centers, etc. Having an armed security guard at these locations makes people think twice before they attempt to steal or cause security issues.
  • Sites with a documented history of violent incidents or armed confrontation: Retail locations that have experienced armed robbery, parking structures with repeated assault reports, or facilities adjacent to high-crime neighborhoods. The decision to hire armed guards is based on the data and previous incidents.
  • Locations where police response times exceed 10–15 minutes: Police officers deal with different types of issues on a daily basis, and the response time in certain areas can be higher than normal. These areas include rural commercial properties, industrial parks, or areas where law enforcement resources are stretched thin. The gap between “something happened” and “help arrived” is the window armed officers are trained to manage.
  • Events or environments with high public visibility and elevated threat profilesThis can be political gatherings, high-net-worth private functions, or corporate events involving controversial public figures. Event security at this level requires armed personnel trained in crowd management and situational awareness.

And when is it not a good fit? A mid-rise office building with controlled lobby access and low foot traffic after hours doesn’t need an armed guard; it needs a trained unarmed officer who handles access control, patrols common areas, and documents everything. A residential HOA with noise complaints and occasional vehicle break-ins is better served by a visible mobile patrol than a stationary armed guard. We tell prospective clients this regularly. Armed coverage where it isn’t needed creates unnecessary liability for the property owner and doesn’t improve outcomes.

Industries We Serve

We provide security guard services for commercial, residential, industrial, and hospitality properties.

Areas We Serve

We provide security guard services throughout Southern California, including Los Angeles, Irvine, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Anaheim, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Newport Beach, Thousand Oaks, and 60+ neighborhoods across LA County, Orange County, the San Fernando Valley, and Ventura County.

How Armed Guard Deployment is Different by Industry

The question property managers ask us is what property types need armed security vs unarmed security. The answer is it is not about the type of property but rather the location, layout, crime rates, previous incidents, and what is stored on the property. For example, a small bank in Orange County may not need armed or even unarmed guards, while the same bank in Downtown Los Angeles may not be able to operate without armed guards. Some industries we provide armed security guards for include:

Corporate security at financial institutions:

Typically, there is a single armed security officer stationed at the entrance, with specific post orders covering lobby monitoring, vault-area awareness, and coordination protocols with local law enforcement. Shift lengths run 8 to 10 hours, and the officer’s primary role is deterrence and controlled response. The firearm is a last resort behind de-escalation training, verbal commands, and physical positioning.

Residential armed security:

When people think of armed security guards for residential properties, they assume HOAs in Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Irvine, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and other high-end neighborhoods. But based on our experience, armed security is hired for every type of residential property. We have clients in West Hollywood who hired armed security guards to stand guard by the door from 11 pm to 6 am, and we have clients in Malibu and Santa Monica who hired our armed security guards for apartment buildings.

Event and hospitality security:

Events and hospitality venues can benefit significantly from armed security guards. We have partnered up with event venues to provide a mix of armed guards and unarmed guards for events like coin shows, car meetups, pop-up stores, and merch selling. We also work with clients organizing corporate events, weddings, or just throwing house parties, who want armed coverage. Armed security guards for events reduce the risk of unruly individuals and create a more controlled and fun environment for everyone.

What to Look for When Hiring Armed Security Companies

Armed guard services proposals involve more variables than most clients expect. Pricing obviously matters, but it’s the third or fourth thing you should compare. A company might quote you a lower price, but if they’re not licensed or insured, it’d be a huge liability to hire them.

First things first, you need to verify the company and security guards’ licenses. Ask the provider whether the company and the guards are licensed. The security company should be able to provide you with their PPO number immediately. In California, that means a BSIS firearms permit with up-to-date qualification records. Ask the company how often their officers re-qualify at the range. If they can’t answer that question immediately, that tells you something about their internal standards.

Next, look for the company’s supervision and accountability policies. A common reason the companies can’t deliver the service they promise isn’t because guards are not qualified or the job is too difficult to handle. It’s actually a bad management system. Look at the company’s supervision and accountability infrastructure. If an armed security guard doesn’t know how to handle a situation at 3:00 AM and there is no one to call, that can become a big problem.

At Safeguard, we answer that question with a three-layer system: Silvertrac digital reporting logs every patrol with GPS and time-stamp verification that clients can access directly; real-time dispatch monitoring reviews hourly reports and contacts any officer whose check-in is late or missing; and randomized field supervisor visits confirm post-order compliance without advance notice to the guard on duty.

Then look at contract terms. A provider that requires a 12 to 24-month commitment before you’ve seen a single shift in action isn’t confident in their delivery; they’re hedging against turnover and service complaints. Safeguard starts every new armed security client with a 30-day trial contract and transparent, itemized pricing sheets. No hidden fees, no vague line items. If you’re not happy or don’t think we’re the right fit at the end of the 30 days, you can cancel with no strings attached.

If you’re evaluating armed security guard services for a property where the risk level justifies armed coverage, the right starting point is a site assessment, not a phone quote. Walk the property with the provider or complete an online evaluation. See whether they ask about your post orders, your incident history, or your response expectations. A company that skips the site assessment and jumps straight to pricing isn’t building a security plan. They’re filling a shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can armed security guards legally do that unarmed guards can't?

Armed guards carry firearms and are authorized to use them in situations involving an imminent threat to life, but only within strict legal boundaries. In California, armed officers can perform a citizen’s arrest under Penal Code 837, detain individuals for law enforcement, and use force depending on the threat level. What they can’t do is conduct searches, make traffic stops, or act as law enforcement. The firearm is used as a last resort and is defensive too. Not something to intimidate others.

Armed guards typically cost $40–$65 per hour, depending on the region, shift schedule, and assignment complexity. The rate difference between armed and unarmed is due to additional training, insurance, and licensing requirements, not just the firearm itself. Safeguard provides itemized pricing sheets so you can see exactly where every dollar goes, and we start all new clients on 30-day contracts.

It depends on what you’re protecting and how fast outside help can arrive. Armed security makes sense when your property holds high-value assets, has experienced violent incidents, sits in an area with slow police response, or hosts events with higher threat profiles. If your main concerns are access monitoring, visitor management, and property documentation, unarmed guards are likely the better fit and the more cost-effective one.

Yes, under limited circumstances. California law allows private security guards, armed or unarmed, to perform a citizen’s arrest when they witness a felony or have probable cause to believe a felony has happened. They must use only reasonable force during the detention and must contact law enforcement immediately. They can’t hold someone indefinitely or use excessive force.

Ask your provider for access to their patrol reporting system. At Safeguard, every patrol checkpoint is logged through Silvertrac with GPS coordinates and timestamps. Clients get direct access to these reports; you can verify patrol routes, check timing, and review incident notes without waiting for a summary email. If a provider can’t offer real-time or near-real-time patrol verification, that’s a gap worth questioning.

What training do armed security guards complete before assignment?

In California, armed guards must complete 40 hours of guard card training plus a minimum of 16 hours of firearms-specific training that covers safe handling, marksmanship, and legal use of force. They also have to pass a criminal background check, be at least 21 years old, and hold a valid BSIS firearms permit. Many providers, Safeguard included, require additional training beyond the state minimum before an officer works an armed post.

It’s treated as a critical incident. The officer follows use-of-force protocols, contacts law enforcement immediately, secures the scene, and provides a detailed incident report. At Safeguard, any firearm discharge triggers a mandatory review with the field supervisor and the client. We’ve seen companies that don’t have a clear post-incident protocol; that’s a red flag during the evaluation process.

For most clients, Safeguard can typically begin coverage within 48–72 hours of a completed site assessment and signed contract. In emergency cases, we can provide an armed guard in less than 24 hours. We don’t deploy armed guards without a site walk and post-order briefing, even on emergency timelines.

Yes. Some locations require both armed and unarmed guards. Typically, larger retail centers, malls, hospitals, and other higher-risk locations. Usually, it will be a split of 80/20. Where it’s 80% unarmed and 20% armed. We help clients design the right mix during the site assessment.

Verify state licensing for both the company and officers. Ask for documentation of firearms training and re-qualification frequency. Request details on their supervision model. Review contract terms carefully: long mandatory commitments before you’ve evaluated the service are a warning sign. And insist on a site walk before any pricing discussion. A company that quotes armed security over the phone without seeing your property isn’t building a plan around your actual risk.
