How Are Armed Guards Trained? 

Because of the immense responsibility involved in carrying a firearm, armed guards must undergo specialized training and certifications beyond standard security personnel. This includes:  

• Firearms Handling & Safety – Training on responsible firearm use, including accuracy, maintenance, and proper storage.  Armed guards must complete two range qualifications during each twelve-month period of the current permit’s two-year term with no two range qualifications completed closer than four months apart per BSIS requirements.
• Threat Assessment & Risk Analysis – Learning to identify suspicious behavior and potential threats before they escalate.  
• Conflict De-escalation Techniques – Using verbal and physical strategies to resolve confrontations without violence.  
• Emergency Response & First Aid – Handling active shooter situations, medical emergencies, and evacuations.  
• Legal & Ethical Responsibilities – Understanding state and federal laws, including when and how to use force.
